Warnings: AU, angst, child abuse, hurt/comfort, under 18, D/s, creature!Harry

The Impertinent Daughter's team had their first game today. Yes, today, Sunday. That's what happens when you move up to U-14, and yes, you read that right, too. Miss Priss is playing U-14, because we did not have enough kids to make up separate U-13 and U-14 teams. And again, it's a co-ed team, but we're playing all male teams.

I wish y'all could have been there, really, truly, I do!

I wish I had videotaped it, because guys... it was really an awesome, sit on the edge of your seats, jumping up and screaming kind of game. My stomach muscles hurt from both holding my camera and yelling my head off!

First off, they won 4-2. Second off, as usual, the boys from the other team thought they could get ahead by scaring and or intimidating our girls, and they tried zeroing in on them. Yeah. Right. Like that's worked before when they've played us!! Look here!

It's been forever since I've sat down and read through an entire book. I used to devour books, but have been reading fanfic or re-reading Harry Potter books for the past several years, leaving a trail of half-finished or never-started novels in my wake. However lately, what with being home so much, I feel like I've read every plot imaginable. I need a break. Not from fandom, but perhaps from fan fic. So I pulled out a stack of books that I bought and have either barely started or never opened. I want your help to decide what I should read! )

Teddy The Terrifying Toddler

Severus had the lost look of a man trapped and afraid. He took a deep breath, straightened his back. "This isn't going to work. He doesn't like me," he growled.

Remus arched a brow at Severus then glanced at Teddy. Teddy's hair turned bright purple. "He's a baby, not a howling monster."

"Are you certain? I know his father has a reputation."

Remus glared at Severus and Teddy squealed, leaning towards Severus and falling out of Remus's arms. Severus neatly caught Teddy, who clung to Severus's neck.

Remus grinned. "Terrifying, isn't he?"

Severus rolled his eyes while Teddy happily cooed.

The Perfect Pot

Remus made his way into the kitchen, trying not to wince as the mid-morning sun nearly blinded him. Leaning against the counter, he thanked whatever gods might be listening he'd prepared the percolator the evening before. He didn't have the energy to cast the proper spells as he turned on the gas.

Remus closed his eyes and waited for the perfect pot of coffee. He knew it was terribly un-British of him to sully tea time, however, the dark, robust flavour and aroma of the beverage carried him through the day after the full moon better than tea ever had.

OMFG YA"LL !!!! My [info]fall_fantasia gift!!! Sep. 7th, 2008 @ 01:22 pm
[info]unbroken_halo
Ya'll my [info]fall_fantasia gift went up this morning! OMG ART!!! Threesome ART!!! and it's asdflkjgh!@#$!!!*flails*loves*dies*recs*!!!! Umm... yeah... That's about how coherent I was trying to post it this morning and let me tell you why.

[info]fall_fantasia is supposed to be anonymous gifting between the participants, but it sometimes happens that the mod has to step in to even out the numbers. This also makes someone have the frightening task, or so I am told, of gifting the mod with something. So the surprise is taken out of it for two people, in my opinion, and therefore, half the fun.

Now, I know I mod the comm and everything, it's my job to look and check over the entries as they come in. But believe it or not, I don't look at the person's that does the one for me until my name is drawn for it to be posted. Insane, maybe, but it's the only way I can think of to retain some sort of surprise. As the gifter and giftee both know exactly who is gifting in this case, my not looking until posting time hopefully allows me to give them a complete first time reaction.

When my daughter stuck her little hand into the ballcap this morning and pulled out my name I was sorely tempted to tell her to put it back and draw someone else. And yes, my kid gets a kick out of drawing ya'll's names out of the hat each morning for me to post the gift. She has no clue what I am doing, she just likes pulling the little slips of paper out of the hat but anyway. I usually leave the gift for myself as last, but then I also realized I was doing the other person a terrible disservice as well by not posting their hardwork sooner. So I began writing up the post and opened up the file from the "mystery gifter".

ASjkdjh@#$!@%$!!!OMFG!!*screeches*calms kidlet down*OMFG!*flails*loves*sighs*dies*

Dumbledore's Man

Severus paced the floor of his-not his, Dumbledore's, it would always be Dumbledore's - office. He smoothed a hand down his robes and took a deep breath, preparing himself for the toughest task of his life. He had hundreds of children to protect this time.

Severus opened the door and stepped out, riding the spiral staircase down and making his way to the Great Hall.

The train would be arriving soon, bringing the students back to school, back to a forever changed Hogwarts. And it was all his doing… on the Dark Lord's and Dumbledore's orders. Merlin save them all.

Sorry I haven't been more active on LJ lately. I've been playing a lot of my video games.

I finally finished Tales of Legendia, and immediately moved on to Tales of the Abyss. Its very good, and I think I'm something like halfway through the game now. Very addicting.

The baby monster started on Thursday in the Tiny Tots class at the dojo. She did well, and had a lot of fun. I've got a few pictures too. I'll try to upload them soon so everyone can see.

L. and C. showed up for class Wednesday and Thursday. They live in Arizona now so we don't see them a lot, but it was great to have them visit those few days. They'll be back next month for the Black Belt testing at the dojo, so they won't be able to show up for the Tournament which would bet two weeks after that. It was a lot of fun seeing them though.

A Fetish at First Sight

After making his decision to deter his mother's matchmaking, Draco began watching Longbottom as he worked. He was subtle, of course, as a Malfoy should be, and didn't think Longbottom had noticed his new hobby.

At first, it was just a peek through the French doors, then a stroll around the gardens, and finally, he started taking long teas out on the balcony.

On the pretence of inspecting the work being done, Draco told himself repeatedly, he ventured out onto the grounds again.

Draco found Longbottom waiting on him.

"Care to explain this new voyeurism fetish you have developed, Malfoy?"

Reveals are up over at [info]hp_summersmut!

What's interesting is that I thought I was being way too obvious about what is going on in the story. But none of the commenters seem to have quite got it.

Or perhaps it's that merely thinking of it as an AU leads to a happier ending/interpretation? I'm fine with that. Once stories go out into the world, as far as I'm concerned, they need to stand alone – and authorial intent can be interesting and a nice addition to one's understanding of the story, but it does not replace any reader's personal experience (nor any scholar or critic's interpretation of the work). The author gets to say what they want in the story itself... the interpretations are not in the author's control. (A lesson J. K. Rowling may not have yet learned...)

So please enjoy the story however you like. But if you are curious about what I intended... the most obvious clue I can point you at is that it's not *really* an AU. There is a canon interpretation of what is going on.

I couldn't quite get the three of them together, without Severus going on strike, so I got as close as I could! And I know this isn't what some would consider "AU" strictly speaking, but I hope it pleases you!

8 days to the wedding Sep. 6th, 2008 @ 03:52 pm
[info]lddurham
Between nearly daily (and nightly) babysitting of the god baybay and trying to get everything sorted for the wedding, I've been a frazzled mess. Last night the intended and I were finalizing the ceremony and we went to make sure our rings still fit. We've had these rings for years but had taken them off months ago for a variety of reasons, such as wanting to have that "just put on" feeling for the wedding. So, I go to get my ring...

Yeah, I seem to have lost it. Months it had been sitting in one spot. Now, it's gone. I have a feeling the cat had something to do with its disappearance. I'm fairly upset, but hopeful it will show itself soon. I'm not thinking about what to do if it doesn't.

In related news, it seems like half the guests are wanting to show up early to "help". It was sweet when grandma and cousin S wanted to come help. And I was excited at the thought of my out-of-town guests coming early to hang with us. But then great-aunt S and aunt J and Aunt D all said they were coming up early, as well. I foresee way too many butts in my kitchen. This has caused my Matron of honor to get territorial and is demanding to know what they are going to be doing and why can't she do it instead. I promised to be a bridezilla just for her. She thanked me.

Grandma also has informed me that she has commissioned aunt J to make a card box. She was not thrilled with our idea of using a photo box that can be put to use after the wedding. You see, it didn't have a lid with a slit in it. That, I am told, is imperative. In case our guests steal from us. Grandma owns her paranoia, at least. So, I will have some sort of card box made to look like a gift, "so that no one will know it's a cardbox." I wonder if I should have my usher play Hot-Cold with those bringing cards.

Also, I just had this conversation with grandma the other day while talking about the card box:
Me: Well, we weren't even sure people would bring cards. But since we really underestimated how many people would actually want to come, we thought we'd better get one just in case.
Grandma: Well, many people will be bringing money. I know of at least two people who didn't know what to get you guys and I told them cash.
Me: Oh. Um, well, we registered with two different charities and organizations.
Grandma: Yeah, but no one knows that.
Me: Dang. It was on the website for the wedding.
Grandma: Website? What website?
Me: The one that is printed at the bottom of the invitations?
Grandma: ...I didn't even look. Oh, well, I'm sure others saw it!

Goodness knows we could use the money, but I really wanted it to go to help the world and not just us. Besides, I would feel so awkward writing thank you notes for cash. "Thank you, Aunt D for the Ben Franklin. You kick ass!"

All in all, I'm still having a good time. Stress is starting to occur, there is still quite a bit of wistfulness over the lack of tableclothes, and we are both nervous that people will think that our wedding blows and be disappointed that they came all that way for it, but other than that, it's good.

Ok! Off to paint some poles for my cake table before god baybay returns for the evening. :D

This won't take you but a few minutes to read. I'm not going to spoil it by discussing it, except to say that it's beautifully written, combines Snape and Hermione in a way I've never seen before, and made my skin crawl in parts, but tempted me to smile at the end. I challenge anyone to read this and then tell me they weren't affected...how, I won't say. Part of my amazement and admiration is due to the fact that she was able to do all this in a ficlet.

Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper): Palin Is “Racist, Sexist, Vindictive, And Mean”
September 5, 2008
by Charley James –

“So Sambo beat the bitch!”

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.

“It was kind of disgusting,” Lucille, who is part Aboriginal, said in a phone interview after admitting that she is frightened of being discovered telling folks in the “lower 48” about life near the North Pole.

Then, almost with a sigh, she added, “But that’s just Alaska.”

Racial and ethnic slurs may be “just Alaska” and, clearly, they are common, everyday chatter for Palin.

Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, “darkie musical” swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s Aboriginal people as “Arctic Arabs” – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful “mukluks” along with the totally unimaginative “f**king Eskimo’s,” according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article.

But being openly racist is only the tip of the Palin iceberg. According to Alaskans interviewed for this article, she is also vindictive and mean. We’re talking Rove mean and Nixon vindictive.

No wonder the vast sea of white, cheering faces at the Republican Convention went wild for Sarah: They adore the type, it’s in their genetic code. So much for McCain’s pledge of a “high road” campaign; Palin is incapable of being part of one.

Tough Getting People Who Know Her to Talk
It’s not easy getting people in the 49th state to speak critically about Palin – especially people in Wasilla, where she was mayor. For one thing, with every journalist in the world calling, phone lines into Alaska have been mostly jammed since Friday; as often as not, a recording told me that “all circuits are busy” or numbers just wouldn’t ring. I should think a state that’s been made richer than God by oil could afford telephone lines and cell towers for everyone.

On a more practical level, many people in Alaska, and particularly Wasilla, are reluctant to speak or be quoted by name because they’re afraid of her as well as the state Republican Party machine. Apparently, the power elite are as mean as the winters.

“The GOP is kind of like organized crime up here,” an insurance agent in Anchorage who knows the Palin family, explained. “It’s corrupt and arrogant. They’re all rich because they do private sweetheart deals with the oil companies, and they can destroy anyone. And they will, if they have to.”

Say it with me now... ouch

Palin's value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women's wombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves "abstinence-only" programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions; she tried to use taxpayers' millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn't spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation; she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.

Gender Roles Sep. 5th, 2008 @ 06:01 pm
[info]rushlight
I was having a conversation earlier this week with a real life friend who's aware of my passion for writing m/m fiction but doesn't really understand the reason for it, and a couple of thoughts came to mind. I know this is a topic that's been discussed to death in slash fandom, but I thought I'd share my random musings here.

First, I thought of my own experiences as a single mother, and how being the only adult in the house has changed the way I view my own gender role. For example, the other day RJ found a scorpion on the floor of our kitchen. When I was married, my response to such a situation would have been to climb on top of the nearest chair and yell for my husband to come and kill it. But because I was the only adult there, my initial response was to calm RJ down, then to go out and find a decent-sized shoe so I could squash the thing myself. Then I picked it up and flushed it.

None of which really has anything to do with why I write slash, but it raised some interesting thoughts about traditionally accepted gender roles and how easy it is to fall into them. Men are the "protectors", women are the "nurturers", etc. That's a tremendous hurdle when writing about two individuals of opposite sex involved in an intimate relationship. When writing m/f fiction, gender roles have to be taken into account even if they aren't addressed directly, because societal and cultural influences are so very powerful. You can certainly write a story where the princess rides off to rescue the knight, but the assumption of most readers is probably going to be that it was written solely to make a statement of some kind. :/

But that goes away when there are two men (or two women) involved in a relationship together. It's like having only one adult in the house.... Without someone of the opposite sex there to force the other character into certain preassigned roles, there's more freedom to focus on how Character A would interact with Character B, instead of how a "man" would interact with a "woman". If that makes any sense?

All of which is a huge oversimplification, I know. I'm sure there are as many different reasons for writing m/m fiction as there are people who write it (one of which is that reading about two men together is just darn HOT ^_^). But I do like the thought that choosing those two characters to focus on gives a writer more freedom to explore the intricacies of their characters, instead of getting bogged down by gender "politics".

Title: Captive

Author: [info]auntbijou
Rating: NC-17

Pairing: Lucius/Harry

Summary: How long before despair and hopelessness destroy all will to live?

Warning: Darkfic, AU, BDSM, mindgames, despair.
Words: 1,463
Disclaimer: I do not own the wonderful Potterverse, J.K. does. I just like to play in it and make the characters do whatever I want. Obey!!

A/N: This was a plot bunny that literally attacked me after I read [info]the_minx_17’s “I Am Here.” It was my first time writing this pairing, though I enjoy reading it quite a bit. And it made me wonder if my writer’s block at that time had more to do with the fact that I seemed to have a well of darkfic in me that needed to be tapped. I guess really, we all do.

...sigh...

My trusty old iPod shuffle is about to die. It's the first generation one, the one that didn't need an adapter or an dock to plug it into the USB port on the computer. When THO first got it for me two years ago, it would hold about 120 songs. Now, I'm doing good to get about 90 on it.

Then, I was preparing to load a new list of music on it, and... when I popped off the cap to expose the USB connector, I found myself staring at a tiny end of data bus. I thought, "Hullo, what's this?" And then I shrugged and thought, "Oh, easily fixed."

Yeah. Right.

No, not easily fixed. I won't go into details, but let us just say that occasionally, I do run into things I can't fix, and this is one of them. It still plays, but... when the charge runs out on it, that's it. It's gone.

*sigh*

Oh well, my birthday is coming up. Here's hoping the Husbandly One will surprise me with a new one!

Plagiarism Update Sep. 5th, 2008 @ 06:02 am
[info]rushlight
Thank you to everyone who's given me the news.... It looks like the story I had plagiarized has been removed from fanfiction.net, and the person who posted it's user account deleted. It's not clear whether ff.net did the deleting or if the thief deleted it herself, but the important thing is that it's gone.

Thank you to everyone who left a comment in the story's reviews chastising her for stealing the story, and/or sent in an abuse report to ff.net. No matter who was responsible for eventually deleting the story, I'm positive the support I've gotten from all of you has had everything to do with it. I think it's absolutely awesome what fandom can accomplish when it pulls together like this.

It's worth mentioning that I got a letter (thank you [info]mysticsong for passing it on to me) from the beta who was thanked in the plagiarized story's notes to apologize for her part in the whole thing. It doesn't look like she was aware the story was stolen, and felt terrible once she found out about it.

EDIT: It looks like the user account is still active, so she probably removed the story herself.

Okie dokie, I'm going for coherency. If I fall short please let me know. You know I hate thinking... it gives me a headach. Like this damn race is doing.

As much as I would have loved having Hillary in office, the Clinton reign is over.

We are faced with 2 very strong opponents right now.

Here's what we know about McCain. He still wants to sent our young men into battle. A battle, btw, that we have no hope of ever winning. Terrorism tis too wide spread to win against it and comes from all ovr, including our own country. We'd have to fight the UK, Russia, France, Asia, India. Every country has nuclear capabilities. What are we going to do? Fight them too? McCain might be a veteren, and he might be Sharon Stones cousin, (*sncker* JK Kudos for those who know where I got that from!) but it doesn't make him right.

And here's something else... he picked a running mate that none of us want to see as president of the US should something
